Waste Audit

On the 21st of October this year, A group of students from the Middle School Roots and Shoots conducted a Waste Audit outside the Year 7 classrooms. We sorted through the content of 4 landfill bins to discover just what we are wasting. One of the most surprising things I found was that only 13.6% of our landfill is actually landfill and the rest of it could be recycled or composted. A lot of this is from people sorting their rubbish incorrectly, but also a lot of it was just that our school doesn’t provide bins for different types of waste; 49.3% of our waste can be composted. From the survey not only did we weigh the different types of rubbish from the 4 bins, but also calculated the number of coffee cups found, which was at the astonishing number of 148! From the day not only did we learn a lot about our bins but with the hope that our next Waste Audit will have more successful results!!!
