Lucas Creek is a creek down by the old gym. Until recently, Lucas Creek was extremely polluted and there was very little wildlife living in the stream. In fact, it was one of the most polluted streams in Auckland because of industrialisation and urban development of the surrounding land. A big change to the wellbeing of the creek happened when some dedicated Kristin students decided to clean it up. It required a lot of perseverance and hard work but the stream is now recovered.
Last term the year nine students created sculptures, animal and insect houses, tree signs and more to promote awareness of the wildlife and the environment, especially birds. The sculptures were placed along the trail next to Lucas Creek to raise awareness about the environment and to make better living conditions for the animals that live nearby. In the end, over 30 items were created and placed in the bush. Representatives from Auckland Council (sustainable school team), Whitebait connection and kaitiaki project were invited along with a representative from Upper Harbour local council Nicholas Mayne, to talk and educate students about their mission. This is particularly important because Lucas Creek is a stop-off point for migrating birds. The end result is a spectacular pathway with lots of information and interesting facts.
