Before school kicked off, the members of the council of sustainability got together to plan
Our year ahead. Over copious amounts of brownies and cookies, we dreamt big and set goals for the year. Some of the key areas we want to impact in 2020 are
the Family Picnic, Reducing our Waste, Enviroschool, Website and Outreach.
Kicking off our Cos year begins with the family picnic. We have been hard at work making
produce bags again and ordered in more reusable coffee cups. As well as that, we have also
extended our product range this year. We will be selling coffee beans and cruelty-free
hot chocolate kits. We are going to be running a mosaic rock painting workshop to
open up a space for people to korero and talk about sustainability together. Both at Kristin
and in a broader sense. We are super excited to be supporting Kristin in running its first-ever
waste-free event. The family picnic is on the 27th of March. We hope to see you all there.
When the Council of Sustainability formed we made some super ambitious goals. One of our
founding goals was to be a waste-free school by 2020. That hasn’t happened yet, so we
have reframed to reduce our waste by 10% each consecutive year. We plan to achieve this
year’s target through a Junior School Composting initiative. There are some super keen
composters in junior school. We are excited to work together and are looking forward to
getting our new system all set up. All in all, this year we aim to meet achievable but potent
goals that keep us and the school community inspired.
A key piece of feedback we got from Silver Enviroschool last year was to reach out more to
other schools in our community. Great idea! By problem-solving collaboratively we can have
a much greater impact, with less individual effort. Sounds good, doesn’t it? We are doing
this by getting in touch with schools in our local area and also through online channels. We
are looking forward to telling you more on this later in the year. Look out for the next Cos
article popping up to keep you in the know.
Finally, Kristin achieving Silver Enviroschools status was a big goal for us all last year. We all
worked hard on this shared goal. We are so pleased to have met this milestone. Most of all
it has been great to look back and see our growth. But we can’t stop here, we are continuing
on our journey towards Kristin being a green Enviroschool with Gold status. This is a big
challenge for us all, but we are up for it. We are breaking down this ongoing goal to meet in
stages. We have identified the importance of monitoring and using data throughout our
school so we can really see the difference we are making. This will help us set effective goals too.
We are keen to get the ball rolling now and hope you will support us. You will be seeing more articles on our website as we achieve and celebrate these goals. Please join us and encourage our progress throughout the year. Thank you for supporting us in our sustainability initiatives. Together we can tackle environment challenges at school and in our community. We are your Council of Sustainability and look forward to a vibrant, environmentally friendly 2020.
