Currently, the world is facing a large pandemic in the 21st century. Such an event has never been experienced in the 21st century on such a large scale. In such a confusing and crazy situation and with so much more time on our hands, it may be a good idea to spend some time with our grandparents and connect with the past.
Ask them a bit about their lives and what events they have lived through that are possibly like this one. Perhaps, communicating with them about their childhoods and comparing it to ours would be interesting. What would they have done if they were in lockdown without technology? Would the same measures have been taken in the past to combat a global pandemic?
It may also be worthwhile to talk to your grandparents about your family background and your family’s origins. Perhaps, you can construct a family tree to pass time at home with your grandparents and learn more about yourself.
Here is a useful website for making a family tree:
Connecting with our Cooking
As we spend more time in isolation it becomes more important to stay socially connected with
people outside our bubble. It’s an especially great time to connect with grandparents and different family members. Sometimes it can be difficult to connect with our grandparents and family members we don’t see often.
A great conversation starter is asking for a family recipe and the story behind it. This helps create a really positive connection and has a great added bonus of creating a tasty treat. A family recipe I recently got was brown sugar meringues and a stirfry.
It was really nice to send some photos out of what I have made and have a nice chat about them. This 'lockdown' is not an easy task to undertake for anyone, but little actions like this can really make someone’s day.
My favourite recipe is hedgehog slice as its always a classic which everyone enjoys.
