Climate Strike

On Friday the 27th of September 170,000 people nationwide took to the streets to protest against the rising threat of climate change. The strike was one of the largest in the history of New Zealand. It was part of a global movement inspired by Greta Thunberg, a sixteen-year-old girl who is frustrated that not enough is being done to stop climate change. Greta has gained support from school children all over the world who want to have a voice in their future. Climate change is the most significant threat to the survival of the planet and the species that inhabit it, including humans. All over New Zealand, the strike attracted not just students, but families, community members and business people who were there to support the movement. There were a number of Pacific cultural groups involved in the protest. The Pacific Island nations are especially vulnerable to rising sea levels which will lead to climate refugees. If you feel you want to participate in the global movement that is calling for action, keep an eye out for climate strikes in your city. More importantly, find out what small changes you personally can make in everyday life that can make a positive difference to the future survival of our precious planet.
