World Environment Day 2020

World Environment Day has been celebrated on the 5th of June since 1974, established by the UN to encourage worldwide environmental awareness and action. In 2020, the theme is biodiversity—something extremely relevant given the events of this year!

This year has been a reminder of the importance of biodiversity. The Australian bushfires killed more than a billion animals, and the Covid-19 pandemic was caused by the trade of exotic animals, whose habitats have often been disrupted.

Today seeks to remind us that ‘to care for ourselves we must care for nature’. This year’s event is held online: they’re encouraging the creation of online events, as well as hosting many high level speakers. Some highlights of this year’s speeches are biodiversities (the relationship between nature and cities), the connection between biodiversity and the climate crisis, and sustainable use of biodiversity.
