There are lots of great projects you can do to help increase the food and safe places to live in your own backyard. It would be wonderful to create some of the following features using items from around the house, to encourage more biodiversity in the community.
Don't forget pest control - traps for rats and possums where possible!
NATIVE WILDLIFE PROJECTS...
- A Lizard garden - concrete, bricks, tiles, roof tiles, rocks - all together with only tiny gaps to let in lizards - they can hide from pests and get warm from the rocks during the day! DOC suggestions here.
- A tui bird feeder - Native birds don't eat bread. They need nectar based food, fruits and berries to eat. Help them survive winter, with a special feeder - just a soft drink bottle and a plastic dish is all you really need - and the sugar water recipe! CHECK OUT THIS SITE for inspiration.
- A weta hotel - find a way to encourage insects into your garden -the good ones that don't eat your vege patches. DOC website with Weta hotel advice .
