Last Tuesday, Kristin co-hosted an international zoom workshop about climate change. This online workshop provided students an opportunity to talk to environmental club student leaders from Australia, China and India as part of an on-line discussion event. The student representatives from each school shared information about what was happening in their countries and in their schools, including the issue facing currently and the positive changes made. Students then all split into breakout rooms where they could discuss different questions and their opinions more in detail in smaller groups.
We saw many great initiatives from the different schools, Woodstock from India is finally composting their waste, as well as starting an initiative to clean up the environment around them. Scotts College from Australia shared sustainable ideas with younger junior kids. WISS from China did a vegan lunch day to promote vegan and sustainable eating, when everyone made vegan food and desserts together. And here at Kristin, we just got new solar panels and water tanks, as well as working towards becoming one of the Green-Gold Enviroschools.
Students also discussed the different challenges they faced personally in break out rooms. Most students shared that they take public transport and sort out their waste to do their little part to help. The overall opinion about what is happening currently were all quite positive, but we also heard other opinions too. One concern brought up by a student in India was the water crisis they are facing along with some other issues such as pollution. While these are huge issues that students may not be able to solve completely, it is good that we see students recognising these issues and doing their parts to help.
This was a great opportunity for students from all around the world who are passionate about climate change to connect with each other. This was also a good opportunity for students to not only share their thoughts on climate change but also a way to meet like-minded people at a similar age. Different ideas were shared in the meeting about what different schools were doing, eg. Creating different initiatives, cleaning up the neighbourhoods, and creating clean energy for the school to use. The four schools are now thinking about having more or regular meetings. To address climate change, we need to unite globally together.
