In Week 5, the 2022 Council of Sustainability embarked on our annual ‘camp’ to promote team bonding and discuss our goals for the year to come. We started the day with a visit to Mahurangi College where we met with Colin, Catherine and some Enviro students to see their forest restoration project and their pest control initiatives, both of which gave us ideas of future projects for Kristin sustainability. We spent the afternoon on the Kristin campus filming the promotional video for the Council team. We then departed Kristin and headed to Sulphur Beach where we completed a beach cleanup and discussed the issues surrounding litter, our waterways and biodiversity. Continuing with the theme of ocean pollution, we then met with Josh at Sustainable Coastlines, a charity that “exists to connect people and nature and inspire change”. Josh showed us around the base, made almost entirely from salvaged materials and powered by solar panels, before introducing us to the various programs that they run. We ended the day with takeaways and ice cream by the waterfront. The following day, we spent time at school outlining our plans and goals for 2022.
